VA Community Care List of Approved Massage Therapies

VA covers “medical massage therapy” when the referring clinician expects it to help and sets treatment goals. This list comes from the VA’s own coverage rules for community care providers (Clinical Determination CDI 00036, June 2025).

Pain conditions (the diagnosis has to be on the referral)

Back pain and neck pain:

Releasing guarding muscles and fascial restrictions improves range of motion and lowers pain scores. Back pain has the strongest evidence in VA’s research review.

Myofascial pain:

VA defines this as trigger points that refer pain in predictable patterns. Trigger point work and myofascial release fit it directly.

Joint pain:

Treating the muscles around a joint eases compression and protective tightness, which helps movement.

Headaches:

Releasing tension in the neck, upper back and suboccipital muscles reduces how often headaches come and how bad they get.

TMD (jaw disorder):

Work on the jaw muscles (masseter, temporalis, pterygoids) plus the neck relieves jaw pain and improves how wide the jaw opens.

Fibromyalgia:

Gentle, paced work calms an oversensitive nervous system. VA’s research review cites it.

Plantar fasciitis:

Calf, Achilles and arch work takes tension off the fascia on the bottom of the foot.

Post-operative pain:

Work around the surgical area reduces guarding and swelling and supports getting movement back.

Cancer pain:

Comfort and pain relief alongside oncology care, with a clearance from the treating doctor.

Non-pain conditions

Scar tissue:

Scar massage and myofascial work loosen collagen adhesions and restore glide between tissue layers. VA cites burn scar research showing less pain, thinner scars and less itching.

Lymphedema:

Manual lymphatic drainage, billed as 97140, moves protein-rich fluid toward working lymph nodes. VA recognizes Complex Decongestive Therapy (drainage, compression, exercise and skin care) as effective, especially in early stages.
